First Dubai Open Taekwondo Championship 2024
Introduction: First Dubai Open Taekwondo Championship
On June 1, 2024, we had the incredible honor of hosting the First Dubai Open Taekwondo Championship at Lycée Français International – Georges Pompidou in Academic City. This wasn’t just another competition—it was a purposeful event, thoughtfully designed by us to give students, especially younger and first-time competitors, the chance to apply what they’ve learned in training and gain real competition experience in a positive, encouraging environment.
This event was created to fill a very special need: to give young martial artists a safe space to compete, grow, and build confidence. Open to students aged 6 to 14, the championship welcomed children of all skill levels and offered them the opportunity to explore the exciting world of Taekwondo competition in a friendly, inclusive setting.
Events
The championship featured three unique events at First Dubai Open Taekwondo Championship, each offering students different ways to challenge themselves and demonstrate their progress.
Poomsae
Poomsae is a sequence of traditional movements that test balance, coordination, and precision. In this event, students performed individually, showcasing the techniques and forms they’ve been working on in class. Poomsae is essential in Taekwondo because it teaches focus, discipline, and correct body control.
Sparring
Sparring is a safe, controlled match between two students, with both athletes fully protected with safety gear. This event allows participants to apply their techniques in a real-time setting, learning how to stay calm under pressure and respect their opponent. Matches were supervised by experienced referees to ensure fairness and safety at all times.
Board Breaking
Always a crowd favorite, board breaking challenged students to break wooden boards using strong, focused techniques. Whether it was a punch, kick, or strike, this event gave students the chance to demonstrate both physical power and mental confidence.
Each event was carefully organized to ensure that students of all skill levels felt supported and encouraged. Whether they were beginners or more experienced, everyone had a chance to participate and shine.
Participation and Awards
How old can a student be to compete in Taekwondo?
At the Dubai Open, we welcomed students aged 6 to 14 years old. This age group was chosen to provide young martial artists with a positive first experience in competition. It gave them the opportunity to learn, grow, and most importantly—have fun in a safe environment.
Overall Participation Award
One of the most exciting moments of the day was recognizing the teams that brought outstanding team spirit and participation. Our Overall Participation Award went to the following top teams:
- 🥇 1st Place – RAK Tigers
- 🥈 2nd Place – Al Moharab
- 🥉 3rd Place – Oryx Taekwondo Club
These teams showed incredible unity, energy, and sportsmanship throughout the day, reminding us that Taekwondo is not just about individual performance—but about community and support.
Learning and Growth Opportunities
More than medals or scores, the First Dubai Open Taekwondo Championship was about learning and personal development. For many of the young athletes, this was their first competition experience. They had the opportunity to:
- Practice managing nervousness in front of an audience
- Apply techniques learned in class in real-life settings
- Show respect, teamwork, and resilience
- Celebrate their effort, not just the outcome
One parent shared,
“My child came in nervous but left with the biggest smile—he felt like a champion just for trying.”
A student said,
“I broke a board for the first time! I didn’t think I could do it, but I did.”
Moments like these are what made the day truly unforgettable.
Conclusion
The First Dubai Open Taekwondo Championship was a meaningful step forward in supporting young athletes across the UAE. It gave students aged 6 to 14 the chance to grow in a safe, welcoming, and exciting environment, helping them build confidence and love for Taekwondo.
To every student who stepped onto the mat, every parent who cheered, and every coach who guided with care—thank you. This event reminded us that success isn’t just about winning—it’s about learning, growing, and showing up with heart.
We look forward to creating more events like this, where students can continue to learn, compete, and thrive as martial artists and individuals.
